We welcome Kavita and her extensive breastfeeding expertise to Alana. Dr Kavita is the Chair, RACGP Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine Special Interest Group (SIG) and determined to see a nationwide change in Breastfeeidng and post partum support. Outside of medicine, she has a strong interest in the outdoors, martial arts, ancient literature and social justice.

Dr Kavita is a Breastfeeding Medicine Specialist and Perinatal GP with special interest in:

  • Lactation and breastfeeding medicine
  • Antenatal health
  • Paediatrics

Dr Kavita Thanakrishnan is a Breastfeeding Medicine Specialist and Perinatal GP. Before becoming a GP, she was a Paediatric Trainee for 6 years with the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network in both city and regional hospitals including Neonatal Intensive Care at the RHW. She continues to have a focused interest in Paediatrics, Antenatal and Maternal Health. She has also completed a Diploma of Child Health with UNSW.

At Alana, Dr Kavita will be providing Breastfeeding Medicine services to our patients. She is an IBCLC – International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and member of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. Dr Kavita is an experienced Neuroprotective Developmental Care (Possums) Practitioner and a Thompson Method Breastfeeding Practitioner and is passionate about improving breastfeeding support, maternal mental health and education.

Alongside clinical work, she enjoys teaching as an Adjunct Lecturer at UNSW, Clinical school of Medicine, Women’s health Department.

As one of the first Australians to have undertaken a Breastfeeding Medicine Fellowship from the University of Rochester, Kavita is passionate about improving breastfeeding support, maternal mental health and education.
