Urodynamics

A series of diagnostic tests that assess how well the bladder, urethra, and sphincter muscles store and release urine. These tests are commonly used to evaluate urinary symptoms such as incontinence, frequent urination, urgency, or difficulty emptying the bladder. By measuring pressures, flow rates, and bladder function, urodynamic studies help guide diagnosis and inform treatment decisions for a range of urological and pelvic floor conditions. The tests are typically performed in a clinical setting and involve the temporary insertion of small catheters into the bladder and rectum.

What are Urodynamics?

Urodynamics is a highly specialised study of the function of the urinary tract. Urodynamics is the only way of understanding why people are continent or incontinent (urinary leakage). The Urodynamics procedure will measure the flow of your urine when you are emptying your bladder, how much urine your bladder can hold, pressure around and in your bladder, and nerve/muscle function of your bladder.  The Urodynamic study helps to guide the best treatment options for your symptoms. At Alana, the Urodynamic study is usually performed with Transperineal Ultrasound, but can be performed without. The procedure will generally take between 45 to 60 minutes and there is a nurse present in the room along with the doctor.

More detailed information can be found in the International Urogynaecology Association information sheet, located here.
